Points from the Pastor's Pen
“For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep.” Acts 13:36a
Do you know God’s purpose for your life? Do you know why God has allowed you to keep living and what He desires to accomplish through your life?
Everyone is born with a God-given purpose and destiny. I am suggesting that, (like David) when I have served God’s purpose, my life on Earth will be over.
However- living out God’s purpose/destiny has at least two big problems. First: many Christ-followers have never discovered what God created them to do. Second: The world, our sinful humanity, and the devil combine forces and do all they can to diminish or destroy God’s plan and purpose for each life.
When King David appointed/anointed Solomon to become King, he gave Solomon a purpose. The purpose was to build the temple to honor/worship God. Solomon followed through and built an incredible temple. However! It was after the temple was completed that Solomon’s many wives turned his heart away from God. I would contend that after completing the temple, Solomon was living without a God given purpose.
When we do not know why we were created, or what God desires to accomplish through us, we will often (like Solomon) choose to believe that life’s purpose is self-fulfillment and (like Solomon) we will end up empty, disappointed, and disillusioned.
Solomon’s father (King David) on the other hand, discovered and lived out his God-given purpose/destiny and died having served his generation.
Every Christ-follower must discover and live out 24/7 their God-given purpose and destiny. We begin to discover why God put us here and why He continues to give us life and breath by:
May it be said of each of us that we served God’s purpose in our generation and then
entered into the eternal presence of God.
