Points from the Pastor's Pen

Where are the Aarons and Hurs?
“But Moses’ hands became heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.” Exodus 17:12-13 NKJV

The pastor is a gift to the church from the Lord. Your pastor’s desire is to shepherd, lead, teach and preach to you with the goal of establishing mature believers who fulfill God’s plans and purposes for their lives. If that is all your pastors did, that would be enough. But, often, pastors have to deal with many other issues like buildings, finances, and other time consuming matters. Let alone the things they deal with on a personal level. So what can you do?

The story of Moses overseeing the battle with the Amalekites shows a very important principle for us to apply on how we can help your pastors. The story tells us that as long as Moses kept his hands raised, the Israelites kept advancing but when they lowered the army started to lose. Standing and keeping your hands raised for long periods of time is very difficult. So what was their solution? Moses leaned on a stone and Aaron and Hur got on each side and held up his arms. How does that apply to how we can support your pastor? The first application is that your pastors, and they know this, need to lean on the Solid Rock. He is their foundation. The second application is what you can do; support your pastors with prayer and serving. Your pastors need prayer. They are visible. They are targets for the enemy to attack. They need your prayers to God on their behalf. Your pastors also need servants. In the early church, the Apostles appointed people to serve tables so they could focus on the ministry of the Word. It is not because they were “too good” or above that. It is because pastors have limited time and when they can focus on their gifts and calling; you get quality pastors and ministry. And do not forget, they chose people who were full of the Holy Spirit to serve, not just a “body”, because serving is very important.

What can you do? Pray for your pastors! I will write that again……..Pray for your pastors! And find a way to support your pastor by taking those things that they do not need to carry, and serve. You will be surprised by how much you can do to advance the kingdom of God when you pray for and support your pastors. Like Aaron and Hur.
